The reign of Nero as the Roman Emperor lasted from 54 to 68 AD. Nero began his reign by having his predecessor's dead body displayed in the Senate to make a mock spectacle of the senators. In retaliation, the Senate declared Nero a public enemy. The people of Rome, however, accepted Nero and gave him a warm welcome. The Senate proclaimed Nero ruler of the Roman Empire, but the people liked him better as a ruler than as a private individual.
