The evening had gone exactly as it should have, for the first time in days. The sun had set and the camp had fallen into an uneasy peace.
The entertainment was over and the makeshift infirmary was busy with the wounded. Kenny, whose arm had been shattered in two places by a rusty pipe, found that the pain was manageable. He was lucky.
They had taken all the clothes from his cell and the only thing he was wearing was the remnants of a shirt from his former days on the outside. The doctors had stitched his arm back on and when he looked at it he could hardly believe how straight it was.
He said nothing to the guards as he hobbled out. His release was a formality, but he knew that he would have to live on borrowed time.
There were too many bodies for his taste. The doctors were certainly swamped. They never had a chance to build them new cells. The bodies were piled up in the yard like so much garbage.
He made his way past them and down to the river. Only a few of the prisoners were left on the side. There was no work that could be done on the river.
There were also no women to minister to, no music to add to the dreary evening. Kenny saw to his surprise that they were feeding a lone prisoner.
“The soup,” one of the guards told him. “Somebody was coming to get it.”
Kenny hobbled up to the man. He would not eat the soup because he wanted to.
“Just got out,” the prisoner said.
“Oh yeah?” Kenny said. “How?”
“I took it,” the man said. “I’m not hungry. I’m in the hospital, but I’m okay.”
